Su Wenkuei is a devout Christian, and his life is full of challenges. However, he always manages to overcome them with the strength provided by his faith. His family background and educational experiences are deeply connected to Christianity, even though his family was not initially religious.
When he was ten years old, his father got injured at work and was admitted to the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei for treatment. Coincidentally, Dr. Mackay’s son, Rev. Su Rei-Lien, who was also the founding principal of Tamkang High School, was hospitalized in the room next to his father’s. Rev. Su Rei-Lien took the opportunity to share the teachings of Christianity with him, especially since they were both from Tamsui. Learning about his connection to Tamsui, Rev. Su became even more enthusiastic. His father accepted Christianity during this time, leading to a transformation in Su Wenkuei’s personality, beliefs, and ultimately, his family’s destiny.
In addition to his father, the church members also brought his mother to learn Romanization to read the Bible and join the women’s fellowship in the church. Subsequently, Su Ba and his sister were brought to Sunday school at the church. At that time, Rev. Su Rei-Lien was already old and ailing, making it a significant achievement for the Mackay family to successfully bring this entire family into the Christian faith. As a result, Rev. Su highly valued them and made special arrangements for his parents to be baptized on March 9, 1962, during the 90th-anniversary celebration of Dr. Mackay’s arrival in Tamsui.

One time, his parents and church members went on an outing to Tamkang High School. Seeing the beautiful campus, filled with cherry blossoms at the time, the church members informed them that the school’s students were well-behaved and excelled academically. His father admired the school and, at a time when few girls attended private high schools, decided to send his sister first. Subsequently, Su Ba and his younger sister also attended Tamkang, and later, Su Ba’s two sons followed suit.
During his teenage years, Su Wen-Kuei participated in the church’s youth fellowship, a group for high school students. While attending the art school, he joined the youth fellowship, a group for college students and young adults. In these years, he served as a leader, president, organized camps, performed in plays, published newsletters, led meetings, hosted various festive events, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. He was quite active and often said, “The church is my youth.” Additionally, he avidly studied the Bible, participated in various evangelistic events, briefly considered becoming a minister, and eventually spent over a decade working in church institutions, gaining some recognition. His outstanding performance was well-appreciated, and at a young age, the church selected him as a deacon. He served as an elder at the Tamsui Church for more than twenty years.

Religious faith deeply influenced Su Wen-Kuei, driving him to engage in cultural and historical work in Tamsui and contribute to his alma mater, Tamkang High School. It’s this religious passion that provided him with a sense of purpose, enabling him to endure challenges and witness the fruits of his labor.
Now retired and no longer serving as an elder, he still maintains his vitality and curiosity. He wishes to explore places in Taiwan he hasn’t visited, intending to document his life through words and images. His life, much like a beautiful poem, is filled with the power of faith and the enthusiasm for living.
